As the Global Simulation Conference 2026 approaches, the lineup of speakers for its thematic forums continues to be announced. Today, we introduce Mr. FANG Yanyan, Vice General Manager of China Automotive Battery Research Institute Co., Ltd., who will speak at the Physical AI, Intelligent Simulation and Data Governance Forum. With extensive experience in testing, evaluation, and simulation of lithium-ion power batteries and next-generation batteries, Mr. FANG will explore the current applications of AI in lithium-ion battery research and development, along with future prospects. Drawing on practical industry experience, he will share insights into how the concept of the “Digital Battery” can connect data across the entire battery lifecycle—from R&D and manufacturing to real-world use—creating an integrated data loop to support innovation and development.

Dr. FANG Yanyan, PhD
Vice General Manager, China Automotive Battery Research Institute Co., Ltd.
Dr. FANG Yanyan is a professor-level senior engineer and currently serves as Vice General Manager of China Automotive Battery Research Institute Co., Ltd., Deputy Director of the National Quality Inspection and Testing Center for Automotive Traction Batteries, and Vice President of the Simulation Technology Industry Branch of the China Industrial Cooperation Association.
His research focuses on testing and evaluation, as well as simulation technologies, for lithium-ion power batteries, next-generation batteries, and their key materials. He has led or contributed to more than 10 national and provincial- or ministerial-level projects, including initiatives under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Industrial Transformation and Upgrading Program (Made in China 2025) and High-Quality Development Program, as well as projects funded by the Beijing Natural Science Foundation. He has received four provincial- or ministerial-level and higher awards and has been selected for provincial- or ministerial-level talent programs on five occasions.
Spanning material development, battery manufacturing, and in-service operation, Dr. Fang’s work integrates testing, evaluation, and simulation modeling across the entire battery lifecycle. As AI increasingly converges with multiphysics simulation, his work on full-hierarchy digital twins for “Digital Batteries” represents one of the central topics of the Physical AI, Intelligent Simulation and Data Governance Forum.

With the rapid development of the new energy vehicle and energy storage industries, the demand for improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries and reducing costs while increasing efficiency has become increasingly urgent. Artificial intelligence is accelerating its penetration into the entire battery R&D process, driving a paradigm shift in the industry from “experience-based trial and error” to “data-driven”.
This report systematically reviews the current status of AI applications in three major areas of lithium-ion batteries—material development, battery manufacturing, and in-service use—assesses the level of technological penetration in each area, and provides an outlook on future development trends.
In materials development, AI employs technologies such as machine learning, graph neural networks, and reinforcement learning to achieve high-throughput screening and performance prediction of materials, significantly shortening the R&D cycle for new cathode and anode materials and electrolytes, while effectively improving the success rate of experimental validation. However, constrained by the scarcity of high-quality labeled data and the difficulty of cross-scale mechanistic modeling, this area remains in an early stage of penetration, with applications mainly concentrated among leading companies and research institutions.
In battery manufacturing, AI-based visual inspection has become a standard feature on production lines, enabling high-precision real-time defect identification and severalfold improvements in inspection efficiency. AI-driven optimization of process parameters has significantly improved yield and shortened the time required for key processes such as formation and capacity grading, with simultaneous improvements in capacity and energy consumption metrics. Manufacturing is currently the most mature area for AI implementation.
In the in-service stage, AI-enabled battery management systems (BMS) have achieved large-scale deployment: deep learning-based estimation of state of charge and state of health, as well as remaining useful life prediction, is significantly more accurate than traditional methods; early warning capabilities for safety risks such as thermal runaway have been greatly enhanced; and intelligent testing and cloud-based diagnostics are becoming standard capabilities for the operation and maintenance of power batteries and energy storage systems.
Looking ahead, this report proposes a development direction centered on the “digital battery”: building a full-hierarchy digital twin that spans the atomic scale of materials, the electrochemical scale of cells, and the module/system scale; and, through deep integration of AI and multiphysics simulation, achieving real-time mapping, state projection, and intelligent decision-making throughout the battery lifecycle.
The digital battery will connect the data closed loop across R&D, manufacturing, and use, enabling the vast majority of testing and validation to be completed in digital space, and driving lithium-ion battery R&D into a new stage of “design as manufacturing, virtual as real”.
The Global Simulation Conference 2026 aims to bring together leading minds from the global simulation community to explore frontier topics, including Physical AI, Intelligent Simulation and Data Governance, embodied intelligence, and industrial large language models. The conference will feature a main forum and 10 thematic forums, covering key areas such as aerospace, smart healthcare, low-altitude mobility, green and intelligent marine equipment, and youth innovation and development.
Dr. FANG's participation will bring valuable, first-hand industry insights into AI-driven battery R&D and the practical implementation of digital twins. We look forward to exploring with you the latest advances in simulation technologies, from cutting-edge research to real-world industrial applications, and their future potential.
